Community Matters

For those of you who know of Bellamy Homes, or follow them on social media – you’ve probably noticed that they’re really big on supporting their community.

Les Bellamy believes that he, and his company have a responsibility to their community! “If we’re building homes in the Kelowna community, then we need to help build the community socially as well” says Les. And this sense of responsibility that he feels towards others, is larger than a donation to a cause. In fact, he sees it as a purpose, in which he finds ways to leverage his influence on other business owners.

An important element for Bellamy Homes is that they focus on charities that help children. A perfect example is the OK Charity Classic Golf Tournament that was held recently. Bellamy Homes was a Diamond Sponsor and a Hole-in-One sponsor for this yearly event, which sees Pro-Am and NHL Players come together for a fun day of golf. This well-respected tournament raises funds so under-privileged kids can play sports.

Les encourages other business owners to give back to their community, but he warns that it’s important to be smart about it. Get to know the charity that you’re considering and understand their needs as well as what it means for your business. Create a relationship with them so you can both support each other! A long-term commitment will definitely benefit both parties, but this can only be achieved if you both feel that there’s value in the relationship.

Here are some more charities that Bellamy Homes supports:

Ride for Reach is a local Kelowna charity, which incorporates Les’s personal lifestyle and the desire to support others. This yearly motorcycle ride takes a group of friends on a fantastic journey, while raising funds for the ‘People in Motion’. The charity provides rides and equipment for disabled people to be able to do sporting activities. This year, the Ride was focused on raising funds for a new van!

You may have seen the social media video on YouTube for ‘Mammas for Mammas’. This group is focused on single women with children and has on-site counselling, affordable clothing opportunities and even a community garden. Bellamy Homes went shopping with the staff for maternity clothes, taking care of the bill at the end of the shopping spree. There is a fund-raiser Gala coming up in November, and Les has already purchased a table!

Les participates in a platform that Businesses and Charities can sign on to, called ‘Do Some Good’. The mission of this organization is to bring individuals, community organizations and businesses together on one platform to build stronger local communities across Canada. This concept truly supports the notion of building a relationship between the Charity and the Business.

Back at home in Bellamy’s own office, as they sign on each new client, the company has a great program called “The Bellamy Community Giving Program” whereby they donate $250 to the charity of their client’s choice. Just last week, the Kelowna BCSPCA received the money on behalf of Ryan, Jenn and family. It feels good to give on someone else’s behalf!

On a different front, Bellamy Homes has supported the Okanagan Trades College through financial donations, construction site tours for the students, and speaking engagements to encourage the students. Also for the last three years, Bellamy Homes has been very involved in the Women in Trades Program. This excellent program is not only an educational facility but also offers counselling programs to these women.

At the end of the day, it feels good to support the community that supports you.
