Designing a Custom Home Around the Way You Gather

05 Oct 2026 - Design-Build

Some of the best moments at home happen when people come together.

It might be a quiet dinner with family, friends gathered around the kitchen island with a glass of wine, a holiday meal that brings everyone to the table, or a summer evening that starts on the patio and carries on well after the sun goes down.

When designing a custom home, thinking about how you gather can shape some of the most important decisions you make. Because entertaining isn’t simply about having a large kitchen or dining room. It’s about creating spaces that make it easy and natural for people to connect.

Start With How You Actually Live

Every family gathers differently.

Some love hosting large holiday dinners. Others prefer casual evenings where everyone ends up around the kitchen island. You may have family who regularly stays for the weekend, or you might envision a home where the doors are always open to friends and neighbours.

These details matter.

One of the advantages of building a custom home is being able to design around your lifestyle rather than adapting your lifestyle to an existing floor plan. Before thinking about finishes or fixtures, think about the experiences you want your home to make possible.

The Kitchen Is More Than a Place to Cook

For many homes, the kitchen has become the centre of gathering.

A generous island can provide space for preparing dinner while guests sit nearby, kids finish homework, or friends pull up a stool. Thoughtful circulation around the island also allows several people to move through the kitchen without getting in each other’s way.

But a great entertaining kitchen isn’t necessarily about making everything bigger. It’s about making it work better.

Features such as a walk-in or butler’s pantry can keep small appliances, food preparation and dishes tucked away from the main entertaining space. Beverage stations, additional refrigeration and strategically placed storage can also make hosting easier while allowing the kitchen itself to remain welcoming and uncluttered.

Create Spaces That Flow Together

The most comfortable gatherings rarely stay in one room.

Guests move between the kitchen and living room. Someone steps outside. A few people gather around the fireplace while others stay at the table.

An open connection between these spaces can make a home feel welcoming without requiring one enormous room. Sightlines, furniture placement, ceiling details and subtle transitions between spaces can help define each area while still allowing conversation and movement to flow naturally.

In the Okanagan, that connection often extends outdoors.

Large doors opening onto a covered patio, an outdoor kitchen or a comfortable seating area can effectively expand your entertaining space during the warmer months and create a natural transition between inside and out.

Make Room for the Moments Around the Table

There is still something special about gathering around a dining table.

When designing a custom home, consider not only how many people you typically seat, but how many you would like to accommodate.

A dining area that works beautifully for six people on an ordinary evening might also be designed to comfortably expand for twelve during Thanksgiving or Christmas. Lighting, nearby storage and the relationship between the dining room and kitchen can all make those larger occasions feel effortless.

Don’t Forget the Overnight Guests

Sometimes gathering means staying awhile.

If friends and family visit regularly, guest accommodations are worth considering early in the design process. A private guest suite, ensuite bathroom or even a separate area of the home can give visitors a comfortable place to stay without sacrificing privacy for either the homeowner or their guests.

For some families, this can also mean designing flexible spaces that can evolve over time, accommodating children returning home, aging parents or extended family when needed.

Design for the Everyday Moments, Too

It can be tempting to design entertaining spaces around the biggest occasions of the year. But the best homes work just as beautifully on an ordinary Tuesday.

That oversized island shouldn’t only shine when twenty people are over for dinner. It should be where you enjoy your morning coffee.

The covered patio shouldn’t only work for summer parties. It might become your favourite place to sit on a quiet evening.

And the dining room shouldn’t feel like a space waiting for the next holiday. It should feel like part of the home every day.

At Bellamy Homes, we believe a custom home should reflect the people who live there and the way they want to live. When those conversations happen at the beginning of the design process, the result is more than a beautiful home. It’s a home designed for the moments, traditions and people that matter most.

Because ultimately, the best gathering spaces aren’t defined by their size.

They’re defined by what happens within them.
